ferris wheel

ferriswheel.jpg

a ferris wheel in downtown Portland. my submission for photo friday: simplicity.

The last time I rode a ferris wheel, I was eighteen years old, visiting Paris with an older man. The gondolas were round, with bucket seats and brightly painted, umbrella-style roofs. It seemed we could tumble out at the slightest movement.

When our gondola got stuck at the top, I clenched my jaw and held tight to the center bar, while my boyfriend lit a cigarette and stomped his feet, trying to tip our seats.

Two men teased me from the gondola above, pointing and laughing at my obvious terror. One of them snapped pictures and said cheese. I wonder whether those photos still exist.

Invisible Insurrection is coming

Sorry for the light posting this week. My co-editor and I have been busy preparing for the imminent release of the very first Invisible Insurrection. The web site has been updated and redesigned, and the complete Fall/Winter 2004 issue will be available for download on 9-11-2004. (Until then, you can read pieces already published in the web edition.)

Issue #1 features writers and artists from all over the country and world - Israel, Chicago, Boston, Alaska, Los Angeles, and Portland, Oregon. With no budget and no pay, this has truly been a labor of love. We cannot wait to develop and improve the site even more.

Be sure and check out the themes for future issues. I would love to see submissions from anti:freeze readers.

a fortune of time

Or is it because so many things happen that we have the illusion of time?

warm winds blowing in from Los Angeles

Wendy breezed into Portland yesterday, bringing her own personal weatherfront. Clouds dissipated. Chilly fall winds warmed up to summer temperatures. The sky - sinus-headache gray since early September - was suddenly blue again. It is hard to imagine that Wendy ever lived in the Pacific Northwest at all; she is so at odds with its climate.

It was strange to hear her voice again after more than a year of email and letters - sweeter and smoother than I remembered, like when I bought Nutella recently for the first time in years and licked a glob straight from the spoon.

I gave her a Yorkie,

and we laughed at the ridiculous label. It's Not For Girls. Somehow, it made us want the chocolate even more.

On Hawthorne, we walked past the display window of a vintage clothing store and kneeled to peek up the skirt of a scantily-clad mannequin.

Her apparatus is showing! Wendy said, laughing.*

So much of Wendy is lost in email. The graceful way she asks waiters to read signs that are too far away. (I would most surely be awkward.) Her straight back as she sits in a restaurant booth. How she notices boarded-up windows on the top floors of neglected buildings, wondering what might be inside. The way she snaps unposed, unannounced photographs, peeking through the viewfinder until you can almost forget she is doing it (but also with respect, giving you ample time to look away.) Her warm smile and intense interest as she listens. The way she nods, slowly and with control, so you can almost see her holding court (as a queen or even a judge). Her thick, black hair, so shiny it hardly seems real - like a Pantene commercial or a glossy fashion spread.

Seeing her made me miss her even more.

At least one thing is gained in our electronic missives: we get each other in writing. For two writers, this can bring its own rich (and Nutella-like) rewards.

*Hee hee. Turns out Wendy actually said mechanism. It cracks me up to think that I rememberd it as apparatus Wonder what that says about me. Hmmm.

notice of volcanic unrest

Why are these words so damn beautiful?

Read all about Mount St. Helen's (possible) impending eruption, at The Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network.

Needless to say, I am thrilled. A good friend has offered to drive me as close as possible when it blows. Portland is close enough to score a good view, but we want a more visceral experience.

New writing coming soon. This week has been intense.
