This is also connected to the general mood of the downtown Portland grid - something I have written about extensively. I am expanding on these ideas and will post more later today (if I don't get distracted by working on my novel or essays).
I think it feels so intense right now because of spring -seasonal changes generate retail pushiness.
Funny, back in Iowa City, I was always able to relax in the downtown square. And in spring, I would often fall asleep in the sunshine. Never here.
