clean, cold

iceclean.jpg

ice cleaner at the skating rink, Lloyd Center

Sometimes, I like to cut through Lloyd Center and watch people figure skate. I happened to walk past during a cleaning break last week, and I found myself hypnotized by the slow slide of the green machine. Out there on the cold ice, it looked exactly how I felt. And so does this picture.

This is the first time I have ever found emotional honesty inside a shopping mall.

Karrie,

It is always such a mind-opening, mind-blowing pleasure to dip into your writing. Thank you so much for your keen and beautiful observations.

I spent a lot of time on the ice as a kid--I was a competitive figure skater--so your photo brings so much back to me: the sharp cold smell of the air, the chlorine aura of the Zamboni (the machine that cleans the ice).

I had a strange little piece published about a Zamboni not too long ago. You can find it at http://greentricycle.com/12/12edge2.html, if you'd like to take a look.

Thanks again for your lovely words.

Heh, I work at the Sam Goody downstairs. I get to see that thing go around all day long. You should come in the early afternoons of week days. There's a man we've dubbed "Crazy Skates" who does full on figure skating performances to an invisible audience. It must be seen to believed.

Gayle,

Zamboni! So that is what they are called! What a strange and lovely word. It sounds like a noodle dish. Or a carnival ride. Or slang for something naughty. :)

Thank you so much for sharing the link to your piece. I plan to skate over that-a-way this morning. You are so filled with grace that is easy for me to picture you figure skating.

(And to all the other readers out there, who may see this - Go read Gayle's writing! She is amazing!)

UJ-

"Crazy Skates" sounds amazing. I will definitely stop by and try to catch him!

Thanks!

Karrie
